Monthly Meeting - All Welcome

January 2009 Meeting
Tuesday, January 6, 7:00 p.m.    Cortez Cultural Center

Linda Farnsworth, Archaeologist for the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, will present a talk on Tuesday, January 6th at 7:00 pm. Linda will speak on "dendroglyphs", or aspen tree graffiti, based on her experiences in the Coconino National Forest, northern Arizona. The San Francisco Peaks area has yielded numerous examples of intricate artwork, some over a century old, mainly created by Basque and Navajo sheepherders. Linda is currently on the staff of the Anasazi Heritage Center. Prior to that, she was an archaeologist with the San Juan National Forest District. The talk will be held at the Cortez Cultural Center, and is free and open to the public.

February Meeting

On February 3rd Fred Blackburn will give a presentation entitled, "Inscription House: The Spanish Myth: 1661 or 1861?" Two years of research and documentation of historic inscriptions at Inscription House in northeastern Arizona has culminated in a research paper describing the expeditionary history of visitation within Inscription House and surrounding canyons. A three year project in cooperation with Jefferson County Open School along with photographers John Cappis and Robert Heyl was conducted under dual permits from the Navajo Cultural Preservation Office and the National Park Service. Miners, Mormon migration, traders, and archaeologists along with Paiute and Navajo settlement make the story intriguing.
